Introduction to Partnership with Code.org

TSIN serves as the regional partner in Tennessee for Code.org’s Professional Learning Programs. The Code.org professional development program supports efforts to expand equitable access to computer science in K-12 schools through a one-year professional development program for teachers. Code.org has programs for all grade levels. All Code.org professional development opportunities require no prior knowledge.

Computer Science Educator Accelerator Week

Announcing the CS Educators Accelerator Week! Join us for a week computer science trainings!
 
Who: There is something for everyone whose job will be impacted by the 2022 CS Law passed by the TN legislature. Specific and differentiated workshops that will build confidence, competence and understanding for Teachers in K-12 (any subject).
 
Where: In-person will take place in the central TN – location to be announced in March 2024
Virtual/Online options available for many workshops
 
When: July 8-12, 2024, some workshops will not meet the entire week.  Dates indicated below.
 
What: All workshops below are free of charge to TN public, charter or private school educators.
Lunch and beverages will be provided each day of each workshop on site.  
Workshops may require overnight lodging.  If you need financial assistance to procure lodging, there are limited scholarships available. Each application has more information.

Application linkLearn how to use Kira’s high school course to prepare students to take the AP CSP exam. This course has been approved by CollegeBoard for use as curriculum. Kira Learning is recognized by the College Board as an endorsed provider of curriculum and professional development for AP® Computer Science Principles (AP CSP).

CS Fundamentals (Grades K-5)

The CS Fundamentals program is a four-day workshop, including the Introduction and Deep dive materials. Participants will learn about computational thinking, as well as online and “unplugged” non-computer activities for the classroom. These workshops are first come, first served.  THIS COURSE IS FULL.
 
 
Travel scholarships available. Details are in the application. Space is limited to 30.

CS Discoveries (Grades 5-10)

The CS Discoveries program does not require a deep prior knowledge of computer science or programming. This workshop builds content knowledge and skills needed to integrate and teach computer science. 
This program uses Code.org free resources and curriculum that are aligned with new Tennessee K-12 Computer Science Standards for grades 6-8. 
 
This application lives in Code.org’s database. We will notify you of application status within a week of receiving it. Travel scholarships are available and you’ll receive information how to apply with application status email. This is a year-long cohort.
 
Those who complete the summer plus 8 virtual workshops of 90-minutes each scheduled monthly after school through the year will receive credit for part of the work required in the CS Endorsement Pathway to add CS Endorsement to your license.
 
This training is a 5 day training offered in person and online, July 8-12, 2024.

 AP CS Principles (Grades 9-12)

There are two choices to prepare to teach AP CS Principles. This option is offered by Code.org and is a 60-hour program that meets in person and virtual July 8-12. and  complete after the 4-day in person training with no meetings throughout the school year. Those who complete the summer plus 8 virtual workshops of 90-minutes each scheduled monthly after school through the year will receive credit for part of the work required in the CS Endorsement Pathway to add CS Endorsement to your license.

The CS Principles program does not require a deep prior knowledge of computer science or programming. This workshop builds content knowledge and skills needed to teach an AP or non-AP version of this course. This full workshop has been approved by the CollegeBoard for teacher training that will allow a teacher to get AP-audit status as approved. This program uses Code.org free resources and curriculum that are aligned with AP CollegeBoard’s AP CS A course and emphasizes how to prepare students for success on the AP CS A exam.

AP CS Principles (Kira Learning)

There are two choices to prepare to teach AP CS Principles. This option is complete after the 4-day in person training with no meetings throughout the school year. 

 

The AP CS Principles program does not require a deep prior knowledge of computer science. Learn how to use Kira’s high school course to prepare students for success on the AP CSP exam. This workshop focuses on the content associated specifically with programming in the AP CS Principles course so some basic knowledge is needed. 
This full workshop has been approved by the CollegeBoard for teacher training that will allow a teacher to get AP-audit status as approved.
Kira Learning is recognized by the College Board as an endorsed provider of curriculum and professional development for AP® Computer Science Principles (AP CSP).
This training is a 4-day training offered in person at MTSU, July 8-11, 2024.
  • In person: 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM CS daily

 

Kira Learning: Middle School Course

This workshop will take teachers through the content and resources in the Kira Course created for TN middle schools that meets the state requirement for direct middle school instruction.
 
Travel scholarships available. Details are in the application.

    Kira Learning: High School Course

    This workshop will take teachers through the content and resources in the Kira Course created for TN high schools that meets the state requirement for CS credit for graduation instruction. Discover how these resources can be used to cover standards in several CS-credit courses.

    Who can apply?

    This program is open to all K-12 teachers in Tennessee. Educators should choose the applicable program according to grade band.

    Who is CS Fundamentals geared toward?

    The CS Fundamentals is built as a beginner step into the world of computational thinking and is geared to K-5 educators.

    When do CS Discoveries and CS Principles applications open and close?

    Applications for the 2021-22 CS Discoveries cohorts are now closed. Applications typically open mid-winter and close in early spring.

    How often do CS Discoveries and CS Principles meet for workshops?

    CS Discoveries and Principles cohorts will attend a 5-day workshop in the summer and have 4 quarterly workshops in the academic year.

    Is there a cost to participate in Code.org workshops?

    Code.org workshops are offered at no cost to participants. Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements and costs.
